What is a Enhanced DBS Check?
Enhanced DBS checks (previously known as an Enhanced CRB) are the highest level of criminal record disclosure available from the Disclosure and Barring Service. It is designed for roles that involve regulated activity or regular, close, or unsupervised contact with children and/or vulnerable adults, as well as other positions of trust where safeguarding is essential. Unlike Basic and Standard checks, an Enhanced DBS may also include relevant police-held information that is considered pertinent to the role. Where the position is eligible, employers can request checks of the Children’s Barred List and/or Adults’ Barred List to confirm whether an individual is legally barred from working with those groups. This provides a stronger level of assurance for high-risk or sensitive environments.
Common roles for Enhanced DBS screening
- Charities & youth work (mentors, coaches, volunteers in regulated activity)
- Social services & fostering (social workers, fostering/adoption roles)
- Education & childcare (teachers, classroom assistants, early years)
- Other roles defined in DBS eligibility guidance
- Health & social care (NHS staff, careers, support workers)

Enhanced DBS Check FAQs
Do organisations need any policies in place to request Enhanced DBS checks?
Yes. Organisations must have two policies in place:
-A policy on the secure handling, storage, retention and disposal of DBS certificate information.
-A policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders
These two policies are required by the DBS Code of Practice and help ensure criminal record information is used fairly, lawfully and securely.
Can an individual apply for an Enhanced DBS check themselves?
No. Like Standard checks, an Enhanced DBS check must be requested by an employer or registered organisation. Individuals can only apply for a Basic check themselves.
What types of roles legally qualify for Enhanced DBS checks?
Roles involving regulated activity with children or vulnerable adults are automatically eligible. Additional eligible positions are defined in safeguarding legislation and DBS eligibility guidelines.
Do Enhanced DBS checks expire?
There is no fixed expiry date for any DBS certificate. Employers decide how frequently they require staff to renew checks, especially in safeguarding settings.
