What is a Standard DBS Check?
A Standard DBS check (also known as a Standard criminal record disclosure and previously as a Standard CRB check) is a criminal record check processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service for eligible roles only. It discloses spent and unspent convictions, conditional cautions, reprimands, and final warnings recorded on the Police National Computer, excluding items that are filtered by law. By comparison, a Basic DBS only shows unspent convictions.
Standard checks are used for positions of trust that do not necessarily involve regulated activity with vulnerable groups, such as certain financial services roles, court officers, prison staff and roles requiring specific licences or statutory suitability. Eligibility is defined in legislation, including the e Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order. Individuals cannot apply for a Standard check themselves; the request must be made by an employer or registered body on the applicant’s behalf.
Common roles for Standard DBS screening
- Court & legal administration roles
- Certain financial & compliance positions
- Licensable roles & positions with statutory suitability requirements
- Roles within the justice system (non-regulated activity)
- Positions involving access to sensitive information of public trust
Prioritise your workforce standards with our Standard DBS check
Standard criminal record checks provided by the Disclosure and Barring service check for spent and unspent convictions needed for certain roles. Our team are happy to assist you and answer any questions you may have ensuring you meet the correct level of screening for your organisations roles.
Our Standard DBS Check service
To request Standard DBS checks, organisations must have two DBS Code of Practice policies in place: a policy on the recruitment of ex-offenders and a policy for secure handling, storage, retention and disposal of DBS certificate information. This ensures fair, lawful and secure handling of criminal record information.
Security & Vetting Solutions is a registered Umbrella Body, authorised to process DBS applications for employers in line with DBS identity and handling requirements. We provide a secure online route with identity verification support (including Digital ID), so your checks are handled accurately, quickly and compliantly.
Most Standard DBS Checks complete in around 14 days, though timings vary depending on volumes and third-party responses. Certificates have no fixed expiry date; employers decide when to renew based on policy, risk or role change.
