What is a BPSS Check?

The Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) is the essential entry-level background screening required for anyone working in or alongside UK government departments, defence organisations, national security environments, or roles involving access to sensitive or confidential information. Established by the UK government, BPSS checks provide a consistent, reliable foundation for assessing identity and eligibility before an individual is granted access to government assets, systems or secure locations.

BPSS checks are a mandatory first step for anyone who may require higher levels of national security vetting. Completing compliant BPSS screening enables individuals to progress into more advanced clearances, including Security Check (SC), Enhanced SC (eSC), Counter Terrorist Check (CTC), Developed Vetting (DV) and Enhanced DV (eDV). Without BPSS in place, no higher clearance can be sponsored or approved.

Common roles for BPSS Checks

  • Civil servants
  • Armed forces personnel
  • Contractors & consultants
  • IT & cyber-security professionals
  • Energy, infrastructure & defence manufacturing roles
  •  Private-sector workers supporting government contracts
  • Aviation & transport security roles
  • Policing support functions
  • Temporary & agency staff

BPSS checks are a mandatory first step for anyone who may require higher levels of national security vetting. Our team can guide you through the process, answer any questions and help you choose the correct level of screening for your roles.

Start Screening

Our BPSS Check service

Our BPSS screening service provides a fast, accurate and compliant process that fully meets Home Office expectations for Baseline Personnel Security Standard Vetting. With secure digital identity verification, streamlined document collection and dedicated vetting officers overseeing every case, we ensure each screening is completed efficiently and to the highest standard. Once checks are complete, you will receive a certificate of screening and written confirmation of compliance with a full pack of evidence for your personnel records and any audit purposes.

A BPSS check does not have a fixed expiry date and remains valid as long as the individual stays within the same organisation or returns within 12 months. However, employers commonly renew criminal record checks every 3-5 years as best practice to ensure continued suitability. BPSS checks can also be transferred to a new employer if recent, complete and properly evidenced, but transferability ultimately depends on the hiring organisation’s policy and audit requirements.

Why choose a BPSS Check?

For organisations hiring into sensitive roles or delivering government-linked services, BPSS provides essential assurance that your workforce is verified, trustworthy and security-cleared at the correct baseline level. The importance of BPSS lies in its ability to reduce risk early in the recruitment process. BPSS screening protects government data, prevents unauthorised access, strengthens cyber-security measures and demonstrates compliance with statutory and contractual expectations. It also provides a clear audit trail showing that appropriate checks have been carried out before an employee is granted access to secure sites or information systems.

Our BPSS Check Process

Step 1

Candidate setup & documentation

Provide candidate details and initial documents (identity, Right to Work, address history). We outline the employment history window (typically 3 years; 5 years if client policy requires) and collect referee details. Your dedicated vetting officer confirms any  extra documentation needed (e.g., proof of address, HMRC/payslips for gaps).

Step 2

Full BPSS check & verification

We complete identity, Right to Work verification, obtain a Basic DBS, verify the employment history and independently confirm any gaps over 31 days. Where applicable, we record education to cover limited work history. You receive clear progress updates and immediate notification of any issues.

Step 3

Results, certificate & audit-ready evidence pack

On completion, you receive a certificate of screening, written confirmation of compliance and a full evidence pack (DBS confirmation, employment references, gap verification, identity/RTW proof). This provides an audit-ready record suitable for inspections, tenders and internal governance.

BPSS Check FAQs

How does BPSS clearance differ from other security clearances?

BPSS screening acts as a crucial first step in the process of obtaining higher levels of Security Clearance. Once an individual passes the BPSS checks, they are eligible to undergo more detailed and comprehensive vetting procedures, which provide a deeper evaluation of their background, financial history and potential security risks.

Can I transfer a BPSS check for a new job?

Yes, BPSS is transferable, but only under certain conditions. A new employer can accept an existing BPSS check if it is recent, valid, and properly documented. Many organisations still choose to repeat the check as part of their onboarding process, so transferability depends on the employer’s policy.

How long does a BPSS check last?

BPSS screening doesn’t have a fixed expiry date and can last indefinitely as long as you stay with the same employer or return within 12 months. It is recommended as best practice to have a criminal record renewed every 3-5 years, as this only contains information up until the check was conducted.

How do I get Security Clearance?

To apply for a security clearance in the UK, you need a sponsor, who is usually your human resources officer or company security controller. The sponsor must confirm that your role requires a security clearance and that a Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) screening has been carried out. See our helpful blog on how BPSS can help you achieve Security Clearance.
